AKA Sorority chapter aided youth, parents though leadership workshop

A youth summit sponsored by Mu Omicron Omega Chapter was held at Smith Middle School in Chapel Hill on April 12.

“Students Willing to Achieve Greatness” was a free workshop designed to equip, excite, and promote youth development and leadership. Workshop topics were designed for students in the sixth through eighth grades.
In Cyber Etiquette 101, students learned how to recognize cyber bullying and important steps to protect themselves using new technology and social media. Nutrition: Why Healthy Eating Matters focused on the importance of maintaining healthy nutrition. Different healthy eating options and choices were discussed.
A representative from a local college discussed admission requirements and the importance of learning good study habits in the Planning for College workshop. This workshop also provided experience filling out important paperwork.
Participants were taught how they can start a business and become an entrepreneur in Entrepreneurship for Teens.
Parents had an opportunity to participate by attending Parent University. Parents learned best practices and strategies on how to parent their children during the growing years of middle school as well as self-care strategies and ways to reduce stress during the parenting process.
Presenters were from local businesses including IBM and UNC-Chapel Hill. Student participants received a bag which included a T-shirt and other gifts. They also had several chances to win great prizes. Students had a fun-filled day of workshops, entertainment and hands-on activities.
