Donation earns troop top honors

Girl Scout Troop 697 from St. Thomas More Catholic School in Chapel Hill earned the Bronze Award (the highest award in Girl Scouts as a Junior) by collecting 700 DVDs and video games and donating them to UNC Children’s Hospital. The girls decided to do this collection for the Bronze Award after doing a smaller collection of art supplies earlier in the year. They learned from a hospital representative that movies and video games are highly desired by the children in UNC Hospital and their families. The girls set a goal of each collecting 100 DVDs and video games for a total of 700 – all within one month. They focused their efforts at school, church and individual neighborhoods. Two things they took away from this experience: They could all easily relate to the patients as they have all had troop members, family and friends who have been hospitalized, and they learned that no matter how difficult the task, hard work is necessary to succeed.
