Bynum Front Porch music series kicks off with Malpass Brothers
Bynum Front Porch, a nonprofit community organization, begins this year’s Friday Night Music Series on May 3 with the traditional country music sounds of Malpass Brothers. Christopher and Taylor have toured with Merle Haggard and perform a variety of traditional country music influenced by the likes of Johnny Cash, Earnest Tubb, Faron Young, Hank Williams, Sr., Marty Robbins, Elvis Presley, Waylon Jennings, Kris Kristofferson and Jimmie Rodgers. In addition to traditional country music, other genres represented during the season include bluegrass, jazz, old time music, rhythm and blues, Latin American and Caribbean, roots, gospel, West African traditional music, folk, Americana, world music, rock, country and honky tonk.
All the Friday Night Music Series performances run from 7 to 9 p.m. on the outdoor stage at the Bynum General Store located at 950 Bynum Road. Although tickets are not required, a hat is passed and a $3 to $7 donation is encouraged to compensate the performers.

The music series began in 2001 as an effort among Bynum neighbors to create an event that would bring people to Bynum that could help sustain the Bynum General Store and Post Office. Unable to make a profit, the General Store’s operator eventually closed the business in 2006. However, the community banded together and created the Bynum Front Porch organization and continues to produce the music series as well as other family friendly events.
People from all over the Triangle bring chairs, sit under the stars and enjoy live music spanning multiple musical genres from May to August.
In addition to the music series, Bynum Front Porch still hosts the Bynum Front Porch Pickin’ the second and fourth Saturdays each month from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the store. These bluegrass sessions are open to musicians and singers of all ages and skill levels as well as to those who just want to enjoy the entertainment.
