DMV moving forward to open Chapel Hill agency

The North Carolina Division of Motor Vehicles has made progress toward opening a license plate agency in Chapel Hill, but it’s likely the agency is still a couple of months away from opening.

The Chapel Hill License Plate Agency, which was in University Mall, was closed last November when the woman who held the contract for the agency was charged with embezzlement for allegedly taking $4,280 from the state of North Carolina.
When that agency was shut down, it left Orange County without a DMV office, and residents have had to travel to other counties to register their vehicles unless they were able to take care of their business online.
The DMV put out a call for applicants to run an agency in the Chapel Hill area.
“We are getting close,” said Marge Howell, spokeswoman for the DMV. “I think they’ve got a potential contractor in line.”
Howell believes the agency will be located in the Chapel Hill area, but she wasn’t able to give the exact location. DMV officials will be visiting the potential site to determine if it meets the requirements for an agency, Howell said.
Once the contractor gets the OK from DMV officials and takes care of procuring the site, the contractor will have to hire employees to work there, she said.
“Any employees would come up here to Raleigh for a three-week course,” Howell said.
Caprina Evette Kirkpatrick of High Point, who was charged with the embezzlement, is scheduled to appear in Orange County Criminal Court to face that charge June 28.
In the meantime, the closest agencies to Orange County are in Durham County at Northgate Mall, 1058 West Club Blvd., Suite 626, which is just off Interstate 85, or at 5410 N.C. 55, Suite AB, which is at the corner of Apex Highway and Sedwick Road in southern Durham;
In Alamance County, an agency is at 2668 Ramada Road in Burlington just off I-85/40.
In Chatham County; an agency is at the Siler City Town Hall at 311 N. 2nd Ave.
