New license plate agency to be located on East Franklin Street
The site of a new Department of Motor Vehicles license plate agency will be on East Franklin Street near the Staples office supply store.
The office, where people can register their vehicles and obtain license plates, will likely open in early to mid-October, said Marge Howell, spokeswoman for the N.C. Department of Motor Vehicles.
The address will be 1704-B E. Franklin St., a spot formerly occupied by an AT&T Store. The site is between Village Plaza and Eastgate Shopping Center.
The old license plate agency, which was located in University Mall for decades, closed unexpectedly last November when its contractor, Caprina Evette Kirkpatrick of High Point, was charged with embezzlement for allegedly taking $4,280 from the DMV. Her case has yet to be heard in Orange County Criminal Court, although her attorney was scheduled to speak to prosecutors about the case during an administrative session this afternoon.
Until the new agency opens, people in Orange County needing services can go online at http://www.ncdot.gov/dmv/online/ or go to other agencies that are in Northgate Mall in Durham or 5410 N.C. 55 in the Greenwoods Commons shopping center off I-40 in Durham or in Burlington or Siler City.
