St. Thomas More celebrates Golden Jubilee
Celebrating 50 years, St. Thomas More Catholic School is kicking off the fun with an honor to its mission Friday.
A special Mass with the Most Rev. Michael F. Burbidge and a golden jubilee dinner with alumnus and CEO of Habitat of Humanity International Jonathan Reckford will end Catholic Schools Week (Jan. 26- Feb. 1) but mark the beginning of the schools 50th year.
“We’re excited to spend 2014 celebrating the history and ensuring the successful future of our wonderful school,” said St. Thomas More Catholic School Principal Michael Ashton. “I personally feel so honored to participate in this celebration. Learning about the outstanding people who have come through this community and learning about the impact St. Thomas More Catholic School has had on so many has been a rich and rewarding experience.”
Along with Reckford as guest speaker, the Jubilee Celebration on Friday will include several presentations in the church including the St. Thomas More Catholic School Legacy Award, the Sister Catherine Fee School Service Award and the Distinguished Alumnus Award.
St. Thomas More opened its doors 50 years ago to 94 students in kindergarten through fourth grade after a groundbreaking in October 1963 on three acres of land that had been donated by a St. Thomas More Catholic Church parishioner William D. Carmichael.
By 1998, there was a new wing, providing five more classroom, bathrooms, offices and a multi-purpose area. In 2012, new music and art buildings were added along with a gym and athletic fields.
Now the school is part of the Diocese of Raleigh and accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, St. Thomas More now serves 437 students in pre-K through eighth grade.
Continuing the celebration is a legacy observation on May 3 with the school’s 50th Anniversary Homecoming and Open House followed by a parish festival June 28.
Throughout the entire year, events will incorporate the 50th theme including a talent show, school musical, Home and School Association Auction Gala, Crowning of Mary, golf tournament and graduation.
