Harvest 18 opens in southern Durham

Harvest 18 now open: Adding to the options for independently owned restaurants in southern Durham, the seasonal, Southern food restaurant Harvest 18 has opened off Renaissance Parkway in the shopping center near SuperTarget.

The restaurant’s menu is planned to be seasonal, and most of the ingredients will be sourced from farms and food purveyors in North Carolina, according to a news release.

This will be the third eatery by Raleigh Chef Jason Smith. Smith’s 18 Restaurant Group also operates the contemporary American grill 18 Seaboard that opened in downtown Raleigh in 2006, and the “south-western inspired” eatery Cantina 18 that opened four years later in Raleigh’s Cameron Village.

Smith has trained at Magnolia Grill in Durham and at restaurants in New York City and in Charleston, S.C.

 “Harvest 18 will continue this slow food movement highlighting seasonal ingredients from the region and adding some creative culinary interpretations to our traditional Southern fare,” he said in a statement.

The menu will include smaller dishes such as pork belly lettuce wraps, cilantro cream and pickled radishes, rice-crusted oysters with collard slaw and Texas Pete aioli, and larger plates that can be shared such as strip steak with blue cheese sorghum reduction; bone-in pork loin with house pepper jelly; and a red pea, mushroom cassoulet with kale and herbed goat cheese.

Lunch options range from green tomato and collard soup with blue crab to wood-fired grilled trout salad with herb vinaigrette to a house-made chicken and sweet potato salad sandwich with kale chips.

Harvest 18 opens daily at 11 a.m. for lunch and serves dinner until 10 p.m. It’s in an approximately 3,045-square-foot space that previously housed a Doc Green's Gourmet Salads & Grill location.

The shopping center, called Renaissance Village, also is home to the locally owned pizza eatery Tomato Jake's Pizza and biscuit and doughnut shop Rise. For more information, go to the website www.harvest18restaurant.com or call 919-316-1818.


Zaxby’s this spring: Durham’s second Zaxby’s is targeted to open this spring on Hillsborough Road in the former location of the independently owned Turkish and Mediterranean food restaurant Bergama.

The restaurant is opening at 3520 Hillsborough Road. It will serve chicken fingers, wings, sandwiches, salads, and milkshakes, among other items.
