Eating out on Thanksgiving? Join the club: This year, 15 million Americans will eat out for Thanksgiving Day nationwide, 14 million people plan to order parts of their holiday meal from restaurants, and another 4 million plan to get a full take-out meal for the holiday, according to a National Restaurant Association survey.
If you live in Durham and are planning to be part of that statistic, you have options.
At The Streets at Southpoint in Durham, the sports bar Champps Americana is opening from 4 p.m. to midnight on Thanksgiving Day.
Maggiano’s Little Italy will also be open that day as well from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. with a special menu.
Ashley Warrick, marketing manager for Southpoint mall, said restaurant owners in the food court can open as early as 8 p.m. on Thanksgiving Day. The mall’s Chick-fil-A will be opening at midnight, and Five Guys Burgers and Fries is opening at 11 p.m.,
Allison Savicz, a spokeswoman for Northgate Mall, said C&H Cafeteria will be open at the Shops at Northgate, the strip shopping center near the mall that also houses Guitar Center, from 10:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Thanksgiving Day.
Bob Evans will be open from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. serving breakfast and holiday food. The restaurant will have a limited menu including an option for turkey served with bread and celery dressing, mashed potatoes and gravy, glazed baby carrots, cranberry relish, rolls, and pumpkin pie or double-crust apple pie for $12.99. Customers have the option of substituting green beans or macaroni & cheese.
For children, Bob Evans will have a “Turkey Lurkey” dinner with turkey, mashed potatoes, chicken gravy, and carrots with a chocolate chunk cookie for $3.99.
All Waffle House restaurants are open on Thanksgiving Day as well as on Christmas. And in case you missed my last report, Time-Out Restaurant on Franklin Street will be open on Thanksgiving Day, and so will Durham’s new barbecue restaurant The Pit.

Zinburger to open in December: Zinburger Wine & Burger Bar is opening at The Streets at Southpoint on Dec. 10, according to Ashley Warrick, the mall’s marketing manager.
Zinburger is an upscale burger restaurant that sells gourmet burgers paired with wine selections. There are five Zinburger locations in New York and New Jersey. The restaurant at Southpoint will be the first location in North Carolina.
Zinburger is opening in the space that previously housed the mall's Rockfish Seafood Grill.
