Durham trails Asheville for ‘Tastiest Town’
Tastiest Town update: Durham was trailing Asheville and had Memphis on its heels in Southern Living magazine’s Tastiest Town in the South competition, according results from Friday. Voting doesn’t end until Feb. 28.
The Bull City was named one of the top 10 “Tastiest Towns” in the 2013 contest alongside Asheville, Atlanta; Austin, Texas; Charleston, S.C.; Greenville, S.C.; Louisville, Ky.; Memphis, Tenn.; Miami, Fla.; and New Orleans.
The magazine’s editors picked the towns based on criteria such as whether there is a unique food or ethnicity that defines a Southern region, growth of a culinary-minded community, diverse cuisine at a variety of price points, local sustainable food practices, and the abundance of buzz-worthy food events.
Voting is accepted online at southernliving.com/tasty. One vote per day is counted toward the final tally. The magazine will profile each town and reveal the winner in its May issue that’s available starting April 19, and online.
Mom’s tea at Fresno Café: Lisa Bence, the owner of Durham’s Fresno Café, is holding a “Celebrating Mom” afternoon tea on March 2 to raise awareness and money for the International Myeloma Foundation.
Bence said in an email that she’s holding the event to raise awareness about myeloma as well as to honor her mother, who died in February 2007 from the blood cancer multiple myeloma.
Multiple myeloma is a cancer of the plasma cells, which are important cells of the immune system that produce and release antibodies to help fight infection.
The tea will be held from 2 to 5 p.m. March 2 at the café. Bence said she’s planning to have tea, pastries and sweets, music, children’s entertainment such as face painting, a raffle, as well as the Chirba Chirba dumpling food truck, and possibly other trucks as well.
The café will not be open with its regular menu; the time frame is just for the tea. There is no admission charge.
“My mom used to volunteer her whole life, (I’m) doing the same thing she used to,” Bence said.
