Northgate Lane Bryant to close

Northgate Lane Bryant to close: Northgate Mall’s Lane Bryant is closing, according to a sign outside of the store. The chain sells plus-size women’s clothing.
It’s owned by Ascena Retail Group Inc., a New York-based specialty women’s and girls apparel retailer that also owns the Justice, maurices, dressbarn, and Catherines brands.
As a result of lower-than-planned holiday sales, Ascena announced Thursday that it was lowering its earnings-per-share guidance for the fiscal year that ends July 27.
In-store sales were down 2 percent in a holiday period that ended Dec. 29, compared with the same period prior year.
Lane Bryant sales were down 9 percent, dressbarn sales were down 8 percent, maurices sales were down 2 percent, while Catherines sales were up 4 percent, and Justice sales were up 5 percent.
Ascena’s total sales, including online as well as in-store sales, were up 1 percent.
In reaction to those results, the company said it now expects earnings per share for the fiscal year to be between $1.20 to $1.30 per share, rather than between $1.45 to $1.55.
David Jaffe, president and CEO of Ascena Retail Group Inc., said in a statement that the holiday selling season was challenging. He added that Ascena upped its promotional activities in order to “ensure appropriate inventory levels going forward.”
“We are taking the necessary markdowns in the second quarter to effectively transition into the spring season,” he also said.
For the year, the company said it continues to plan to open about 200 stores, and to close about 125. The plan is to end the year with about 3,900 Justice, Lane Bryant, maurices, dressbarn, and Catherines stores.
