Mr. Tire in Durham: Tire King stores are now operating as Mr. Tire stores following an acquisition of the Durham-based Tire King chain by Rochester, N.Y.,-based Monro Muffler Brake Inc.
The acquisition of the Durham-based Tire King chain was one of four acquisitions the company made in November and December of last year, according to a news release about Monro’s third-quarter financial results.
The company’s acquisitions in those two months added 79 stores to the chain. Together, the 79 stores generate $138 million in annualized sales, according to the release. Tire King’s nine stores generate annual sales of about $11 million.
There were nine stores in the Tire King chain, with multiple stores in Durham that became Mr. Tire stores in December.
Mr. Tire is one of the Monro Muffler stores brands that offer maintenance and repair including oil changes, brakes, wheel alignments and other services.
The chain also has stores that operate under the names Tread Quarters Discount Tire, Autotire Car Care Center and Tire Warehouse. The company said in a news release in January that it had 939 stores across the nation

Sixteen of the former Colony Tire locations became Mr. Tire locations, and Colony Tire stores in Outer Banks at Manteo and Kill Devil Hills became Tread Quarters locations. A Colony Tire location on N.C. 54 in Durham is now a Mr. Tire.
In January, Monro reported that it saw a net income was down about 17 percent to $11.3 million in the third quarter of its fiscal year that ended Dec. 29. Its sales were up about 8 percent to $190.4 million in the quarter.
