Measurement Building getting retail

New beer store planned: Options for craft beer are expected to grow downtown with the forthcoming opening of a new beer shop.

Bryan Scherich, director of operations and development for the real estate development firm Measurement Durham, said in an email that the shop Beer Durham is targeted to open in the late spring or sooner, if possible.

So far, it’s the only true retail shop the company has signed for the Measurement Building at the corner of Morris and Hunt streets downtown, he said. The building is adjacent to the Durham Farmers Market and Durham Central Park, and is one block south of the Durham Athletic Park.

The five-story office building has retail space on the ground floor, and is primarily occupied by the educational testing firm Measurement Inc.

Scherich  also said that a new veterinary hospital is expected to open downtown in another Measurement property. Bull City Veterinary Hospital is expected to open this month on Fernway Street in the Measurement Inc.-owned Imperial Building. 

The hospital is not the only animal hospital to come to downtown. Broadway Veterinary Hospital was slated to open in December at 205 Broadway St.


Furniture on the boulevard: Kamiya Furniture Gallery has opened on Durham-Chapel Hill Boulevard selling furniture and art from Bali, a province of the Southeast Asian country of Indonesia.

The shop has opened at 2611 Durham-Chapel Hill Blvd. next to Hair by Design and National Pawn.

Shop co-owner Jeremy Kamiya, who also doubles as a graphic designer, said he and his wife Irene Kamiya have handpicked the furniture on display in the shop. Most of what they’re selling is accent and statement pieces such as chairs, buffets, tables bar stools, bar sets, he said, and are made with teak wood.

Prices range from a solid teak table priced at around $2,000, he said, to a buffet priced at around $1,300, to smaller sculptures that start at about $100.

“I guess we’re kind of in the Pottery Barn range,” Kamiya said.

Bread-baking contest: The new owner of Ninth Street Bakery, the long-time bakery and café on East Chapel Hill Street downtown, is hosting a bread-baking contest from 5 to 8 p.m. Jan. 24.

Competitors can enter in either of two categories. One category limits the baker to the four ingredients of flour, water, yeast and salt. The other is an “anything goes” category in which ingredients are not restricted.

Registration is free, but entrants must email ninthstbakery@, and bring two loaves of bread for both judges and the public to taste. There is a $100 prize for the winner of each category.

Admission to the event is $8, and will include free bread samples along with butter, hummus, dipping sauces, olive oil and vegan Earth balance. There will also be bowls of vegan black bean mole chili, vegan hand pies, salads, snacks, beer and wine for purchase.

Bakery owner Ari Berenbaum purchased the bakery last year to carry on the “tradition and legacy” of Ninth Street Bakery.

“W plan to stay true to the mission of Ninth Street as a wholesome, organic, socially responsible business, (and) one that has been the anchor business of downtown for 20 years, while modernizing recipes to interest the palate of the Durham foodie,” he said in an email.

The bakery sells wholesale bread to 30 area supermarkets from Raleigh to Greensboro, he said, and has a café that’s open Monday to Saturday. Berenbaum said the bakery is making over its daily lunch menu to have a "global street food" theme.  He said the bakery is adding their falafel, which was formerly only available on Fridays, as well as tamales, Thai curry rice bowls and savory vegan hand pies (baked empanadas). 

“These are some of our fan favorites that have been on a daily rotating basis, now available every week day,” Berenbaum said.


Menu additions for Koumi: Koumi Japanese Cuisine, a restaurant on North Roxboro Street, has added Vietnamese and Thai dishes to its menu, in addition to sushi and other items.

Owner John Ma said the restaurant is planning to serve dishes such as Pad Thai, Panang Curry and Chicken Satay.

Ma said the restaurant now has a beer license.
