Matthew's Chocolates to serve gelato

More gelato in Hillsborough: Matthew’s Chocolates, a chocolate shop in downtown Hillsborough, is now serving gelato in addition to selling chocolates.

This will make two shops in Hillsborough that will be selling gelato. The owners of the Hillsborough pizza eatery Radius Pizzeria are also opening a gelato and crepe eatery called Yum in May at 118 S. Churton St.

Matthew Shepherd, the owner of the independent chocolate shop, said that while the shop makes its own chocolates, they’re using a North Carolina company to supply the gelato. He declined to name the company.

“We make absolutely everything in the shop; we just can’t add anything more to it,” he said.

Shepherd said he’s looking to open additional shop locations eventually and to have a kitchen with gelato equipment so he can also make that in-house.

“Right now this is the best way to offer gelato in the flavors I want,” he said.

Shepherd said he’s looking for shop locations within a two-hour drive from his location in downtown Hillsborough at 107 N. Churton St.


Venable expansion: Venable Rotisserie Bistro is planning to expand this summer in the space previously occupied by DSI Comedy Theater.

The restaurant will take over the space May 15, said Nathan Milian of N.R. Milian & Associates, the leasing agent for Carr Mill Mall. He said construction on the space is expected to take several months. The restaurant is targeted to open in late summer.

The bistro is adding a bar and banquet facility with the 1,300-square-foot addition.


Mexican food restaurant in Hillsborough: It’s been a few months, but in case you didn’t know, El Restaurante Ixtapa opened earlier this year in Hillsborough serving breakfast, lunch and dinner.

The eatery is at 162 Exchange Park Lane, about 100 yards from the entrance to Weaver Street Market, according to its website. It’s in the location that previously housed Riverside Restaurant & Catering.

The restaurant’s online menu includes breakfast items such as chilaquiles, which are fried tortillas with red or green salsa topped with cheese, sour cream and raw onion or eggs, egg dishes and waffles. The dinner menu includes quesadillas, tacos, burritos, burgers and salads.
