Old Chicago coming to Chapel Hill’s 140 West: A location of the Old Chicago Pizza & Taproom chain of casual restaurants is planned to open at the 140 West mixed-use development on Franklin Street in Chapel Hill.
The Old Chicago menu includes Chicago-style pizza, pasta, calzones and salads, and the restaurants also sell craft beer.
Kendria Sweet, a spokeswoman for 140 West, said the company will be opening a restaurant in 6,800 square feet of space that fronts on the plaza. She said they’ll also have some outside dining.
“It has a nice, well-rounded menu, a lot of offerings, a lot of price points, they’ve got the beer piece of it,” Sweet said. “It’s just got a great menu; it’s a good solid brand, and we think it’ll be strong for Franklin Street.”
Sweet said the company has leased a little more than 50 percent of the retail space in the new development, and has sold 109 of 140 condos.

More details on restaurants coming to Carrboro’s 300 East Main: Two of the three restaurants slated so far to go into the first phase of the 300 East Main mixed-use development in Carrboro are planned to share a kitchen.
Kenneth Yowell of Moonlight Management LLC is planning to open the East Main Meatball Shoppe in the development, and a second restaurant focused on empanadas. He said the empanada restaurant will be similar to an existing restaurant he owns in Raleigh called Calavera Empanadas.
“The two restaurants will have very different concepts (focusing on meatballs and empanadas respectively), but will share the same kitchen,” he said in an email. “Our hope is to be open in the very early fall of this year.”
In addition to those restaurants, a Charlotte-based company behind a regional chain of Hickory Tavern sports cafés is planning to open a location in the development.
And Cameron’s, a tenant of Chapel Hill’s University Mall that sells gifts, jewelry, cards, clothing, bath items, toys, and other items, is relocating to the development.
The first phase of the 300 East Main project includes a Hampton Inn & Suites, a parking deck, and 18,100 square feet of retail and restaurant space. The hotel is expected to open in July.
