Coffee bar and store opens at museum

New museum store now open: Elements, a coffee bar and store, is now open at the Museum of Life and Science selling home goods, culinary science gifts, contraption-style building sets, and science gadgets.

The store closed in mid-November and re-opened earlier this month under new management and with new products. Leslie Pepple, the museum’s communications manager, said the store sells more upscale products with options for adults as well as children.

Pepple said examples of store merchandise includes GoldieBlox toys, blown glass solar-powered garden lights, blankets made from alpaca wool, and candy science and molecular gastronomy kits.

Museum members receive a 10 percent discount on all store items, including coffee bar items. 
The coffee bar serves Joe Van Gogh coffee and baked goods sold by the museum’s café Sprout Café and bakery partners.

Elements Coffee Bar and Museum Store is off the museum's main lobby. It will be open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday to Saturday and from noon to 5 p.m. on Sundays. Monday hours will resume April 7.

The store that had previously operated in the space has moved. Pepple said that store sells small takeaway items and clothing with the museum logo.


More on the new Southpoint Zinburger: To mark its opening at The Streets at Southpoint, the new Zinburger Wine & Burger Bar restaurant is donating 10 percent of its sales Tuesday through Thursday to the Durham Public Schools Scholarship Foundation.

The restaurant sells gourmet burgers paired with wine selections. It’s opening Tuesday in the space that previously housed Rockfish.

The first Zinburger opened in Clifton, N.J., three years ago, according to a news release. There are now five locations between New York and New Jersey. Additional restaurants planned for Florida, Virginia, and Atlanta.

The restaurant serves cooked-to-order burgers, with signatures including the “Zinburger,” which is made with Manchego cheese and Zinfandel wine-braised onions, and the Kobe Burger, which is made with Vermont cheddar and wild mushrooms. It also sells turkey burgers, turkey sloppy Joes, an yellow fin tuna burger, a veggie burger, two chicken sandwiches and five salads. 

At the bar, the restaurant serves cocktails, 17 beer selections, including eight on tap, and a wine menu with 23 varieties priced from $5 to $15 a glass. On Wednesdays, the restaurant sells bottles for half price. “Happy Thursday” features happy hour all day with a $5 plain and simple burger, half-price sides and discounts on cocktails.

The hours of operation are from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Sunday to Thursday and from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. Friday and Saturday.

Upscale store for men: An upscale men’s clothing and accessories store called Jack Men’s Provisions opened earlier this year at Brightleaf Square in the space that previously housed Tempo Mine and Adorn.

“Most people think of a men’s store as just clothing and whatever, but we sell everything from shaving supplies to pens and watches, jewelry, scarves, shoes – we may even have some home décor that would go into the man cave,” said owner Doug Hahn.

The store is open in 2,000 square feet of space in Brightleaf selling items including shaving brushes, casual clothing, socks, toiletries, umbrella, shoes and messenger bags.

Hahn, a Durham resident, also owns a store at University Mall in Chapel Hill called Details, and previously, he owned a store in Brightleaf called Torso Men’s Apparel.

“(Durham has) really changed a lot since then, with downtown and redevelopment, and there’s this insurgence of younger blood,” he said. “I’ve been thinking of doing this for some time; there was just never very much turnover here at Brightleaf, so when this came up, I kind of jumped on it.”

The store is open from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday to Saturday and from 1 to 6 p.m. on Sundays. December 14-16, the store will carry a line of Liebeskind women’s handbags.


Chick-fil-A marks anniversary: The Chick-fil-A at University Mall in Chapel Hill has been in business 25 years.

The restaurant, which has had a series of different franchise owners, marked its anniversary on Friday with a cake-cutting, food giveaways and other events.
