Meat market, sweet shop to open

Butcher and pastry shop: The whole-animal butchery and pastry shop Rose’s Meat Market and Sweet Shop is nearing its opening in the Brightleaf Square area.

The shop will open Friday at121 N. Gregson St. in space that previously housed a showroom for Clear-Vue Glass. The shop is opening around the corner from Alivia’s and is near Brightleaf Square.

Justin and Katie Meddis are the husband-and-wife team behind the business. In their shop, they will be selling cuts of beef, pork, chicken and lamb, four different types of sandwiches to-go initially, pastries, and food items.

The shop is planned to have about six different sausages on Friday, two types of bacon, some pâtés for sale, as well as cuts of meat cut to order, Justin said in an interview Tuesday.

On the pastry side, Katie said the shop’s menu Friday is planned to include a peach galette, which is a fruit-filled tarte that Katie said will be “nice and crusty,” as well as a panna cotta, which she said is an unbaked custard that will be made with buttermilk, strawberries, and candied kumquat jam. She also said she expects to have a dessert on Friday featuring North Carolina blueberries.

And in addition, the shop also will be selling items such as tomato sauce, pasta, olive oil, nut butter, barbecue sauce, mustard and drinks including natural sodas.

“We have a lot of items that will complement a dinner; it would be a one-stop shop,” Katie said. “It’s bright and white and clean and full of really delicious local products,” she added, speaking of the shop.

The business is not a sit-down eatery, Katie said. All food items are served to-go. The hours will be from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday, and closed Monday.

El Rodeo at Brightleaf: Brightleaf Square’s El Rodeo Mexican Restaurant has re-opened. The restaurant closed in March after a fire.

Andres Onate, the son of one of the restaurant’s owners, Javier Onate, said the restaurant’s kitchen is new. That’s where the most damage was, he said.

The restaurant re-opened Thursday.

“We’ve been receiving a lot of support from our loyal customers,” Onate said.
