Restaurant opens in Erwin Terrace
Don Martelo’s: A restaurant called Don Martelo’s has opened in the Erwin Terrace shopping center off Erwin Road.
It’s in the second-floor space that fronts on Erwin Road that previously housed Sandella’s Flatbread Café. The development is also home to Nosh and Six Plates Wine Bar.
The menu includes enchiladas, quesadillas, tacos, burritos, sandwiches, and soups. Attempts to reach the owner by deadline Friday were unsuccessful.
New Cato location: The Charlotte-based women’s clothing retailer Cato has opened a store at the North Pointe shopping center in northern Durham.
The center is off of Interstate 85 near Northgate Mall. It’s also home to PetSmart, Ross, Home Depot, and Bed, Bath & Beyond stores.
The space in the center vacated by World Market was divided into three different spaces. One is taken up by rue21, and another one is now occupied by Cato. The third is still vacant.
Cato is one of the stores operated by the Charlotte-based, publicly traded fashion chain The Cato Corp. The company was founded in 1946 and as of Feb. 2, was operating 1,310 stores under the names “Cato,” “Cato Fashions,” “Cato Plus,” “It’s Fashion,” “It’s Fashion Metro,” and “Versona Accessories.”
The stores called “Cato” sell an assortment of apparel and accessories, including dressy, career, and casual sportswear, dresses, coats, shoes, lingerie, costume jewelry and handbags, according to the company.
Update on The Pit’s opening: The opening of the new barbecue restaurant The Pit is nearing, according to the owner.
The restaurant is planned to open in a former soda bottling plant at the corner of West Geer Street and Rigsbee Avenue, across from Motorco Music Hall. It’s in the same building as Fullsteam Brewery.
Greg Hatem, founder of the Raleigh-based restaurant group Empire Eats, said the opening date had not been set yet, but he expects the opening to be in two to three weeks.
“We’re getting close,” he said.
The former bottling plant has been renovated to include a private dining room to seat 130, a main dining room to seat another 130, and a rooftop deck.
Hatem said they built two kitchens and two bars (one upstairs and one downstairs).
There will be what Hatem called a “pig bar” in the dining room where customers can watch food being prepared.
“The pits are in the back behind the main kitchen, but you can see the pits in the main kitchen through this opening at the pig bar,” Hatem also said.
The interior of the main dining room will be set up after the company gets its certificate of occupancy, Hatem said, but will have a 43-foot-long communal table.
The Pit in Durham is part of the Empire Eats restaurant, bar and coffee shop group that also includes The Morning Times, The Raleigh Times, Sitti and Gravy. There’s also another location of The Pit in Raleigh. The restaurant serves whole-hog, pit-cooked pork barbecue and other items.
Timbering off 15-501: A site at 4950 Durham-Chapel Hill Blvd. has been timbered, according to Steve Medlin, director of Durham City-County Planning.
The site is near the New Hope Commons shopping center and is across from where Gateway Commons is under construction. At full build-out, Gateway Commons will include a hotel, retail shops and restaurants.
Medlin said in an email that timbering is allowed in all zoning districts. However, he said it must be done in alignment with a forest management plan “which uses the best management practices as defined by the state.”
No permits are required by the city or county for timbering, he also said. But any site is subject to an ordinance would prevent the developer from getting site plan approval for five years in the city and three years in the county if the timbering is done without maintaining the correct buffers.
