The Buzz: New Peruvian restaurant opens

Mi Peru opens serving seafood, rotisserie: A Peruvian family has opened a new restaurant called Mi Peru at 4015 University Drive.

Restaurant manager Lucila Vergaray said the restaurant is owned by her parents, Edwin Vergaray and Gladis Munoz, who owned and ran a restaurant in Lima, Peru, more than 13 years ago before coming to the United States.

Vergaray said they had a dream of opening a restaurant here. Initially, she said, her father moved to New York, where he worked as a dishwasher, or cutting meat. Later when her mother moved to the country, she worked in a Laundromat.

She said she and her mother moved to North Carolina for more space and a lower cost of living, and eventually her father and brothers followed.

They opened the restaurant Saturday. She said they have seafood on the menu since they’re from the coast of the South American country. They also imported a charcoal oven from Peru in order to serve rotisserie chicken.

The menu includes ceviche dishes, including one called ceviche de pescado that includes grouper that’s diced and marinated in lime juice with corn, sweet potatoes and lettuce for $17.99, as well as ceviche made with tilapia for $12.99, and ceviche made with shrimp, calamari, scallops, mussels, octopus and tilapia for $$14.99.

It also includes dishes such as Peruvian-style stir fry with sautéed onions and tomatoes and served with crispy potatoes for $13.99, a pan-fried steak dish served with rice, yellow plantains, fries and fried eggs for $15.99, and a dish with stewed beef, cilantro sauce, rice and beans for $16.99.

They’re serving a quarter of a rotisserie chicken with two sides for $7.99, and a half chicken for $10.99. They also have a $7.99 lunch special from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The restaurant location previously housed Rick’s Diner & Catering Co., which is now on Shannon Road and is called the Hope Valley Diner & Catering Co., and after that, a series of restaurants including Bear Rock Café and Fresno Café.


Triangle Brewing Co. Pint & Plate launches food menu: The kitchen has opened at Triangle Brewing Co.’s Pint & Plate to allow for the bar (and now restaurant) to start serving food.

Pint & Plate opened last year at 802 W. Main St. near Brightleaf Square, in the space that previously housed The Roxy. The owners of the Durham brewery Triangle Brewing Co. partnered to open the new restaurant and bar.

The kitchen opened May 29, according to their website. The menu posted online includes burgers, an all-beef hot dog, a grilled chicken sandwich, a tortilla salad, sides, soft drinks and appetizers like sautéed shrimp and pickle chips.


Bean Traders to expand: Bean Traders Coffee, the coffee shop in the Homestead Market shopping center in southern Durham off N.C. 54, plans to expand into nearby space and to start serving specialty waffles.

This will be the third expansion for the shop at the location, which opened in 2000 in what was initially a 1,400-square-foot space.

They’re expanding again to bring their total to 5,200 square feet. Co-owner Christy Chapman said they want to build a new bar in their middle space to make more room for food and specialty drink offerings, in addition to serving Bean Traders-roasted coffee drinks.

In addition to serving coffee, they have teas and alternatively brewed coffee drinks, as well as ice cream, milkshakes, bagels made in Chapel Hill and organic juice, as well as local artisanal food and local products.

Chapman owns Bean Traders with her husband David Chapman.

To their menu, they’re planning to add specialty waffles (think ginger blueberry flavor drizzled with honey and served with ice cream), as well as fresh-squeezed juices, wine and beer. They would have seating around the bar, she said, so customers could watch their coffee, juice or waffles being made.

“Just like you can see someone make you a French-press pour-over or a latte, you’re going to watch them make the waffle right there for you,” she said.

Chapman said they plan to do the renovation work in stages. Initially, she said they expect to close the middle space for renovations so they can keep the coffee bar open to continue to do business, and start doing up-fit on the third space.

In three months, she hopes to have the new and middle side done, and to be able to close the initial space with the coffee bar for renovations.
