A Connecticut-based hotel company formally announced Monday the plans for the new Aloft hotel that will be built downtown next to the Durham Performing Arts Center, on the Blackwell Street side.

Construction will begin later this year on the 134-room hotel, Starwood Hotels & Resorts Worldwide Inc. announced, with the opening targeted for May of next year.

The hotel will have an outdoor splash pool, a bar, a 24-hour gym, private parking and about 2,230 square feet of flexible meeting space for business meetings and social gatherings.

“The leading-edge design and social vibe offered by our Aloft brand is a terrific match for the revitalized American Tobacco Historic District, an exciting, mixed-use complex that has helped accelerate the redevelopment of downtown Durham,” Brian McGuinness, Starwood’s senior vice president of specialty select brands, said in a prepared statement.

The owner will be Davidson & Jones, the Raleigh based company that manages the Sheraton Imperial hotel in Durham and the Marriott Courtyard hotel at Triangle Towne Center, according to the announcement.
