‘Pursuit of Happyness’ author to speak in Durham

DURHAM – As part of the celebration of its 115th anniversary, Durham-based N.C. Mutual Life Insurance Company is sponsoring a presentation by Chris Gardner, author of the book “The Pursuit of Happyness,” on Oct. 7.

Gardner, an entrepreneur, author, philanthropist and single parent, will give a presentation on some steps he took and the obstacles he faced in overcoming poverty and homelessness and creating the life he wanted to live, according to a news release. His story was the inspiration for the 2006 film starring Will Smith.

The event will be at noon at the company’s headquarters at 400 W. Chapel Hill St. in Durham. The event is free and open to the public.

It’s part of a series of events the company is holding in recognition of its anniversary.

The celebration will culminate in celebrations and special events in October.

Durham chamber to hold ‘Greet the Purchasers’ event

DURHAM – The Greater Durham Chamber of Commerce will host a “Greet the Purchasers” event Oct. 9 that will offer information on becoming a vendor to private companies and government.

Small and medium-sized businesses will have the opportunity to meet and network with purchasing agents and other officials from companies and government agencies. The City of Durham, Cree, Duke Energy, Duke University, Frontier Communications and Lenovo, among others, will be represented..

The event, part of the city’s elebration of Minority Enterprise Development Week, will be from 8:30 to 10:30 a.m. at the Durham Convention Center.

Registration is available on the chamber’s website, www.durhamchamber.org. The cost is $20 and $30 for non-members.
