Nonprofit opens Durham office

LAKE WACCAMAW – The nonprofit Boys and Girls Homes of North Carolina has opened a satellite office in Durham to serve Durham, Wake, Johnston, Orange, and Alamance counties.

The nonprofit provides adoption and foster services as well as residential care at a campus in Lake Waccamaw for children who have been removed from their homes due to abuse, neglect or other family dysfunction, according to a news release.

Open houses will be Thursday and Jan. 24 and 28 at the office in Durham, which will focus on providing foster care and adoption services.

The drop-in open houses will be from noon to 2 p.m. in the new office at 6015 Fayetteville Road, Suite 111.

Anyone wishing to learn more about the nonprofit, how to become a foster parent or how to help, is encouraged to attend.

In February, the nonprofit will offer training classes for individuals and couples in the area who are looking to become foster parents. For more information on the open houses or training, call Keeva Nichols at 919-294-6273.

CED to hold life science conference Feb. 27-28

DURHAM – The entrepreneurial support organization CED will hold the CED Life Science Conference 2013 Feb. 27-28 in Raleigh.

The N.C. Biotechnology Center and NC Biosciences are presenting partners, according to a news release.

The keynote speakers are planned to be Dr. N. Anthony Coles, chairman and CEO of Onyx Pharmaceuticals Inc.; Dr. Samuel Nussbaum,, executive vice president of clinical health policy and the chief medical officer for WellPoint Inc.; and Jack W. Szostak, the recipient of the 2009 Nobel Prize in physiology or medicine who is a Howard Hughes Medical Institute investigator as well as a professor of genetics at Harvard Medical School.

The conference co-chairs are David P. King, CEO of LabCorp.; Ed Mathers, partner, NEA; and Brad Wilson, president and CEO of Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina.
