A Raleigh-based self-publishing company has acquired Durham-based Replay Photos, an e-commerce business that sells athletic and campus photography on its Web site.

Lulu, a company that allows consumers to print and sell on-demand books, e-books, and photo books, announced the acquisition Thursday.

The deal expands Lulu’s self-publishing offerings, according to the release, and allows Replay Photos to offer its photographs in printed formats including for home décor, as framed art and canvasses.

Replay has licensing agreements with the Associated Press, Getty Images and numerous professional and collegiate sports organizations, according to the release, and can offer hundreds of thousands of images to consumers online and in retail outlets.

“We’re pleased to become part of Lulu, a company known for innovating how consumers access and explore digital content in the form of books and art,” said Sue Harnett, founder of Replay Photos. “We are excited to join the Lulu family and look forward to future growth as we introduce Replay to new audiences and continue to expand our image-based offerings through personalized and localized consumer products.”

Lulu was founded in 2002 by Bob Young, who is also a co-founder of Raleigh-based Red Hat. Harnett, a 1991 Duke graduate, founded Replay Photos in 2003.
