Duke QB Pierre has surgery
Duke freshman quarterback Nico Pierre had surgery last Friday to repair a broken thumb on his non-throwing hand.
Pierre is expected to be able to participate in preseason practices for Duke, which begin in August. The 6-foot-2, 203-pound Pierre was a likely redshirt candidate this season even before the injury.
The injury was discovered when Pierre arrived at Duke and was given a routine physical exam. He had surgery at Duke’s medical center.
A product of Miami’s Coral Reef High School, the athletic Pierre is considered a four-star prospect by various recruiting services.
On this year’s team, Duke returns redshirt senior Anthony Boone as its starting quarterback with redshirt sophomore Thomas Sirk and redshirt freshman Parker Boehme battling for the No. 2 position.
The Blue Devils are coming off a 10-4 season that established a school record for wins in a season. Duke finished No. 23 in the final Associated Press rankings.
The Blue Devils open this season Aug. 30 against Elon at Wallace Wade Stadium.
