1 critically injured in 3-vehicle accident
The accident happened around 5:20 p.m. after a BMW stopped with its flashers on in the second lane from the right on I-540 North.
Durham policed gave this account:
A Honda was travelling in the far right lane when the vehicles in front of it started to slow down significantly, according to Durham police investigators. The driver of the Honda apparently swerved to the left to avoid colliding with the car in front of him in the far right lane but his vehicle struck the stopped BMW.
The impact caused the BMW to spin around and caused the Honda to veer into the far left lane into the path of a Ford F150 truck pulling a boat trailer. The front of the Ford F150 struck the driver’s side door of the Honda.
The driver of the Honda, Brendan Dowd, 23, of Carrboro, had to be extricated and was taken to the hospital for treatment of critical injuries. The driver of the BMW, Nelson Figueroa, 40, of Raleigh, and the driver of the Ford F150, Jason Hughes, 38, of Raleigh and two passengers in the Ford (a 3-year-old girl and an 8-year-old boy) did not appear to suffer serious injuries, according to investigators.
A witness told investigators it appeared that the BMW was stopped in traffic but Figueroa told investigators the car was malfunctioning and he was trying to get the vehicle off the highway. The accident remains under investigation.
No charges had been filed late Wednesday but the accident remained under investigation.
The Honda was a total loss. The BMW sustained rear damage and the Ford F150 and boat trailer were damaged.
