Stolen dog is found OK
Sophie has been found.
The 9-year-old Yorkshire Terrier that was stolen from a family's Forest Hills home Tuesday was reunited with family members Thursday after a sixth-grader from Shepard Middle School led the owner to a house on Roxboro Road.
Elizabeth Newman said she was in tears when the family, who had bought Sophie not knowing she was stolen, turned the dog over to her. Newman said Sophie was happy to see her, and was tired but in good shape.
The boy had approached Newman as she was putting up reward posters for Sophie's return Thursday.
"He started running off, and turned back and said: 'Is there really a prize?' And I said: 'Yes, there is a prize.' ''
"Then he said: 'Yeah, I saw her (Sophie) and they'll give her to you!' And we were in disbelief. And I said: 'How long have they had the dog, and he said they just got her on Wednesday."
Newman said the family's 6-year-old girl was heartbroken to have to give up Sophie, but the family knew it was the right thing to do.
"When we walked up to the house, Sophie was in their arms, and I took her in my arms," said Newman, who was in tears. "We are thrilled, and the support that we've gotten from the community has been overwhelming. People kept calling and giving us tips and prayers and love."
"It's just been a miracle."
Newman said the boy will get his $500 reward.
