Teen charged in grandmother's stabbing death
DURHAM – An argument apparently turned violent Wednesday morning, leaving a 62-year-old grandmother dead, one grandson badly hurt and another charged with murder.
Durham police arrested Treyvon Evans, 17, in connection with the stabbing death of Carolyn Hemingway in the apartment they shared at on Glasson Street. Evans also is accused of hurting his 4-year-old brother, who was taken to the hospital with serious injuries.
A 911 call received by Durham’s emergency communications center painted a frantic picture about 5 a.m.
“Get an ambulance,” a woman said over the phone. “Get an ambulance now.”
Someone carried the wounded child upstairs to a neighbor’s apartment, the caller said.
“This boy’s got a gash in his neck,” she told the operator. His grandmother’s in a pool of blood, she added.
“Is his grandmother awake?” the operator asked.
“No, she’s not awake,” the caller said. “She’s not conscious.”
Evans is charged with murder and attempted murder. He was held without bond in the Durham County Jail.
