Carrboro names new police chief
Walter Horton, a captain with the Carrboro Police Department, has been tapped to succeed Carolyn Hutchison as police chief.
Hutchison retires in September.
Horton, appointed by Carrboro Town Manager David Andrews, was born and raised in Carrboro and attended Chapel Hill-Carrboro City Schools. He joined the department in 1993.
He graduated from Mount Olive College with a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice. He received his advanced law enforcement certificate in 2001.
Horton began his career as a patrol officer before moving to the Community Services and Investigations divisions. He was a lieutenant in Criminal Investigations before he was promoted to captain of Administrative Services in June 2011.
He was selected after a nationwide search that drew 101 applicants from as far away as the U.S. Virgin Islands.
