Duke men's basketball nonconference schedule
Duke opens its men’s basketball season Nov. 14 as part of what could be one of the best sports weeks on campus in years.
The Blue Devils announced their non-conference schedule Wednesday morning, showing that the season-opening game is Nov. 14, a Friday night, at home with Presbyterian.
The following day, Nov. 15, the Blue Devils welcome Fairfield to Cameron Indoor Stadium. Also that day, Duke football plays Virginia Tech at Wallace Wade Stadium. The football game with the Hokies starts a stretch of three home games to end the season as Duke aims for two consecutive ACC Coastal Division championships.
After that busy Nov. 15 with home basketball and football games, the week continues with the basketball team hitting the road for big events.
On Nov. 18, Duke plays Michigan State at Indianapolis in the fourth Champions Classic event. Kansas and Kentucky play the other game in the doubleheader.
Back on campus, school officials will be preparing for a Thursday night football game with North Carolina on Nov. 20 at Wallace Wade Stadum.
The following day, on Nov. 21, Duke basketball plays Temple at Brooklyn’s Barclays Center as part of the Coaches vs. Cancer event. On Nov. 22, the Blue Devils will play either UNLV or Stanford, coached by former Duke star player and assistant coach Johnny Dawkins, at Barclays Center.
Those games are two of the four nonconference basketball games Duke will play in the New York City area this season.
On Dec. 18, Duke plays reigning national champion Connecticut at the Izod Center in East Rutherford, New Jersey.
On Jan. 25, Duke takes a respite from its ACC schedule to play St. John’s at Madison Square Garden.
That game with the Red Storm is one of two nonconference games Duke plays on opponents’ home courts this season. On Dec. 3, as part of the ACC-Big Ten Challenge, Duke plays at Wisconsin.
Thanksgiving week features two home men’s basketball games and the regular-season finale for Duke football.
On Nov. 26, the night before Thanksgiving, Duke basketball plays Furman at Cameron Indoor Stadium. On Nov. 30, a Sunday, Duke plays Army in basketball.
In between, on Nov. 29, Duke football plays Wake Forest at Wallace Wade Stadium.
Prior to the start of the regular season in basketball, Duke holds its annual blue-white scrimmage at Countdown to Craziness with a slight twist. The event, routinely held on a Friday night in past years, will be on a Saturday (Oct. 25) this year.
Duke athletics spokesman Jon Jackson said the shift to Saturday was made in conjunction with Parents Weekend events on campus.
Duke follows its established pattern with its two exhibition games at Cameron Indoor Stadium. The game against an in-state Division II foe will be Nov. 4 against Livingstone. The game against the reigning Division II national champion, Central Missouri, is Nov. 8
