Mom indicted in accidental shooting death of son, 9
A Durham County grand jury issued indictments charging Amy Suzanne Pittman in the April accidental death of her 9-year-old son.
Officers responded to a shooting call at 412 Macon St. about 9:41 p.m. April 28. There they found Christian Pittman dead due to a gunshot wound. His mother, Amy Pittman, 36, of Durham was taken into custody.
Tapes of the 911 call said the young boy was playing with the gun when it went off.
“He shot himself, but he didn’t know it was loaded,” the caller said in the tapes.
Investigators deemed his death an accidental shooting. Amy Pittman was not at home at the time, but three children were in the house when the shooting occurred. At the time of the investigation it was unclear why the gun was left loaded and unlocked.
Christian Pittman was a student at Glenn Elementary School at the time of his death.
The grand jury indicted Pittman Tuesday on one count of voluntary manslaughter, three counts of felony child abuse - gross negligence, three counts of misdemeanor child abuse, three counts of contributing to the delinquency of a minor and one count of failure to store firearms to protect minors.
She is currently in custody. As of Tuesday afternoon she was not listed as an inmate at the Durham County Jail.
