Panhandling charges dismissed in court
Charges against 14 people who were cited earlier this year for violating the city's panhandling ordinance were dismissed this afternoon in Durham County District Court.
Assistant District Attorney Brian Lewis agreed to drop charges at the request of defense attorney Ian Mance after evidence was presented that the defendants had received no new charges since an October hearing and were making progress with finding a job and housing.
Judge Marcia Morey agreed to the dismissals, and imposed no court fines.
Three cases were rescheduled for Jan. 22.
