Tornado suspected in Durham
The National Weather Service in Raleigh on Thursday said a tornado appeared to strike in the area of Hope Valley Road and University Drive. Meteorologists noted a rotation and tightening of the storm cell, along with lofting debris.
"We're pretty sure it's a tornado," said Ryan Ellis of the NWS. "We'll have to go out and survey it tomorrow to be sure."
So far, it appears damage was limited to trees and power lines. At least 5,000 Duke Energy customers were without power shortly after the storm came through between 6 and 6:30.
