Man killed in downtown Durham train accident
A grain-hauling Norfolk Southern train struck and killed a man as he walked on railroad tracks near Fayetteville and Pettigrew streets in downtown Durham on Monday.
The accident happened just before 4 p.m. The eastbound train from Indiana was bound for Kinston before hitting the man on the tracks.
He was pronounced dead at the scene, according to police spokeswoman Kammie Michael. His identity hadn’t been released by police late Monday.
In January, 23-year-old Corbin Lee Valdez was killed by an Amtrak train while walking on a railroad trestle at Neal Road in an apparent suicide.
It’s not clear yet why the victim in Monday’s accident was on the tracks or whether he intended harm to himself.
