Ex-Bull Ryan Roberts caps comeback in 9th, Sox win in 11
Ryan Roberts did his part to beat his former team Wednesday and top prospect Mookie Betts finished it off as the Pawtucket Red Sox beat the Durham Bulls 8-7 in 11 innings.
Roberts, who hit one home run in 37 games with the Bulls last season, homered in his second at-bat at the Durham Bulls Athletic Park this season and then hit a tying two-run double with two outs in the ninth.
That set the stage for Betts, the 2013 Red Sox Minor League player of the year who got called up to Triple-A on Tuesday. The 21-year-old hit a home run over the Blue Monster to give Pawtucket (29-32) the win in a rematch of last year’s Governors’ Cup final.
Betts finished 3 for 6 in his second Triple-A game while Roberts went 2 for 5 with three RBI as the PawSox overcame a late three-run deficit.
After Durham (36-25) scored six runs in the seventh to go ahead 7-4, Jeff Beliveau was called on for a two-inning save because regular closer Kirby Yates had been used on Tuesday.
But after a 1-2-3 eighth, Beliveau lost his command and allowed his first runs of the season after 25.2 scoreless innings between Durham and Tampa Bay.
Beliveau walked three batters in the ninth and they all came around to score as Pawtucket overcame a 7-4 deficit, capped by Roberts’ hit into the rightfield corner.
The PawSox won for just the 6th time in 22 games, while the Bulls fell to 10-4 in their last 14.
Seven straight Bulls reached base against four different pitchers as Durham appeared to break the game open with a six-run seventh inning.
The Bulls trailed 4-1 at the stretch when Mikie Mahtook started the rally with his International League-leading 21st double. Wilson Betamit walked, and Jayson Nix hit an RBI double off the videoboard in left. Vince Belnome then tied the game with a two-run single, and Curt Casali put Durham ahead with a RBI single up the middle.
After Robby Price was hit on the foot, Ray Olmedo had an RBI single – his third hit of the game – and Hak-Ju Lee reached on a fielding error by shortstop Mike McCoy.
Mike Fontenot then struck out for the second time in the inning and Mahtook grounded out on a check swing to finally put an end to the seventh.
The Durham comeback provided another tough-luck no-decision for Greensboro native and Madison resident Allen Webster, who gave up one run in six innings. It was the 10th time that Webster gave up two or fewer runs, and the eighth time he didn’t get the win.
The PawSox took the lead against Mike Montgomery, who was trying to become the third IL pitcher with seven wins.
Roberts hit a 3-2 pitch over the snorting bull in left field to put the PawSox up 1-0 in the fourth inning. Olmedo’s two-out RBI single evened the score in the bottom of the fourth, but the PawSox scored two more in the fifth and once in the sixth to go up 4-1.
Both teams then overcame three-run deficits, putting the Bulls in extra innings for the first time since May 19.
NOTES — The Bulls have just two outfielders on the roster, Justin Christian and Mikie Mahtook. Infielders Jayson Nix and Robby Price manned the corner outfield spots with Mahtook in center before Christian entered as a defensive replacement in the eighth inning. … Alex Colome will make his second start for the Bulls today at 7:05 p.m. Colome, who was suspended for the first 50 games of the season for taking performance-enhancing drugs, tossed five scoreless innings in his Durham debut on May 31. He will be opposed by Pawtucket’s Steven Wright (0-1, 3.00), who is on MLB rehab (hernia).
